Recently I read this quote: “Good things DON’T take time.” It deeply resonated with me and felt like a breath of fresh air.
“Good things take time” and “don’t worry you’re still young!” are probably the two most common statements I’ve received.
And while it’s said to me with good intentions, it almost feels like a limitation — that I have to wait till I get older or more experienced in order to achieve what I want.
The truth is, when I look at the life and career I have now, I never thought I would be where I am since graduating 3 years ago.
I find that the more you study, acquire knowledge, be around the right people, and take courageous action, the more you can collapse time.
I knew that. I knew that too well. For years I hustled incessantly, doing as much as I can and soaking the advice from people with decades of experience. I did it so much I lost my voice. I didn’t know what I wanted anymore.
It was after rounds of constant burnout did I get forced into slowly down and tuning in.
I took the time to reflect, to get curious as to WHY I was working so hard in the first place. I was working so hard because I didn’t want to lose out. I’ve felt left behind throughout my academic years because I never felt good enough. I didn’t want to waste my potential. I didn’t want to disappoint myself and my parents.
I was working so hard because I was driven by fear. And when fear colours your lens of the world, you don’t know what’s good or bad for you anymore. You just keep running, even when every cell and fibre is telling you to slow down.
Inner work + Outer work — both are important.
Inner work is the process of understanding your beliefs, thoughts and emotions. It is adjusting and creating your mindset so that it helps you better facilitate your goals and live a happier life according to your values.
Outer work is the work you do that is seen by others. It is the actions you take to move closer to your goals.
Most of us tend to over-focus on either inner work or outer work, but we’ll need to do both to bring ourselves into balance.
As I learnt to make both inner and outer work part of my way of life, I find that the good things are inevitable.
So actually, good things come at the right time — a timeline created by you and what’s meant for you in this season of life.
And the only way it’ll feel right, is when we tune into our own inner compass every step of the way.
It is when we listen to our inner wisdom that we create flow in our lives, and with flow comes power and possibility.
