You’ll never have to “start from scratch”

Have you ever thought — “Ah, when I move to a new company, I have to prove myself all over again”

It gets frustrating when you have to “restart” building your reputation and relationships when you enter a new working environment. But do you really have to?

Thing is, building your personal brand intentionally would save you the trouble from”starting from scratch”.

I call this “Awakening your Authentic Self” – knowing who you are, what you stand for, and communicate it offline and online, so that you leave a strong, unforgettable impression that will be picked up by your new colleagues.

Building your personal brand will allow you to be recognised in your industry, be remembered for your unique gifts and personality, which increases your visibility and opportunity.

So how exactly do you Awaken your Authentic Self, and communicate it so that the impression lasts?

1. Know what makes you Unique

It’s easy to compare yourself to colleagues who are older, and more experienced. Know that YOU have your unique race, gender, upbringing, culture, experiences, challenges you’ve grown through, you have your unique stories.

Ask yourself: What about your unique make up (all of this combined), gives you a unique take on the business that no one else can?

2. Identify your Values and Life Philosophies

What do you stand for? What do you advocate for? People remember you for your convictions – because when you speak about it, it resonates through your bones.

Have conversations with people and read about what’s happening in the world – What are the issues that you feel compelled to do something about?

3. List down How you can Contribute

Take a look at your work experience and studies – what are the skillsets that you can bring into your industry?

Consider your expertise in other fields not directly related to your work, they might actually be helpful! i.e. Your expertise in psychology could give your a unique insight for your role as a social media manager.

Once you’ve defined what your Authentic Self is, you can start communicating it online and offline so that people identify you with it!

ONLINE:

  • Sharing your insights and stories on social media (i.e. LinkedIn)
  • Contribute your perspectives by commenting on the posts of other thought leaders

This is powerful because there’s a high chance your future employer will search you up on Google or LinkedIn before your interview. They would then already have a stellar impression of you before they meet you.

OFFLINE:

  • Share with people at work about your perspectives and insights – don’t just stick to talking about the weather during lunch.
  • Look out for initiatives within your organisation that you resonate with to contribute to

Remember, you have unique thoughts and perspectives, no matter how much experience you have. Your workplace needs diversity in ideas – and your unique voice needs to be heard.

Awakening your Authentic Self is one thing. Communicating it is another.

Knowing how to say what you want to say with effectiveness and impact requires learning the relevant speaking and communication skills and practicing it, so that you:

  • Share your ideas with impact in a meeting
  • Answer confidently when asked a question (not stumbling and stuttering)
  • Create an unforgettable impression the minute you step on the stage during a presentation

When you set the intention to build your brand and do it well, you’ll build a timeless brand that will follow you throughout your transitions and changes.
